The importance of taking time to STOP, pause, enjoy and celebrate

August isn't just a holiday month. It's an opportunity to reset, reflect and prepare yourself to enter the final quarter with renewed energy, purpose and intention.
Joy is central to my coaching practice as both a strategic tool and a leadership strategy. What I have witnessed, and have been guilty of myself over the years, is becoming completely engrossed in the hustle.
As soon as I completed one project, it was straight into the next one, the next deadline, without taking the time to STOP, pause, enjoy and celebrate.
Women have long been conditioned to simply get on with the work. For many Black women, that expectation has been even more deeply ingrained—to keep going, work harder and move from one achievement to the next without stopping to celebrate.
The concept of stopping, and, even more outrageously, celebrating our achievements, was alien to many of us, and certainly to our mothers' generation. We were taught resilience, perseverance and hard work, but rarely encouraged to acknowledge our successes before moving on to the next challenge.
So, on Friday, I was delighted to heed my own advice. I chose to STOP, enjoy and celebrate with lunch at the beautiful riverside restaurant, The Compleat Angler in Marlow, with Alison Forde and my mother. It was a wonderful afternoon spent eating, laughing and making plans for the final quarter.
It reminded me that celebration doesn't have to be extravagant. Sometimes it's simply giving yourself permission to recognise how far you've come before focusing on where you're going next.
As ambitious women, we often believe our value lies in our productivity. However, I would argue that our greatest strength lies in knowing when to STOP.
Taking time to pause isn't stepping away from success—it's part of creating it. When we reflect on how far we have already come and celebrate our wins and achievements, we restore our energy, renew our perspective and prepare ourselves to lead the next quarter with intention rather than exhaustion.
So, I have a question for you.
What have you achieved this year that you haven't yet stopped to acknowledge?
Before you begin planning September and the final quarter, give yourself permission to celebrate the progress you've already made. Success isn't only found in the next milestone; it's also found in recognising the journey that brought you here.
Sometimes the most strategic thing you can do isn't to work harder.
It's to STOP, pause, enjoy and celebrate.
I'd love to know: What achievement are you celebrating this August?
